What is Celsius?
The Celsius scale identifies temperature in degrees Celsius, symbolized by °C. This scale is widely accepted all over the globe. Celsius is part of the metric unit system, meaning it can also be used to measure the temperature of water, food, air, and even the human body.
In this scale:
- Water freezes at 0°C
- Water boils at 100°C
Let's take an instance of the summer and winter months. The temperature on a hot summer day might reach up to 30°C, while during the winter, temperatures could plummet below 0°C, hence categorizing it as cold. A normal human’s temperature is approximately 37°C.
As part of the metric system, it is easier to understand because of its two set benchmarks: freezing and boiling. Whether for scientific experiments, cooking, or daily chores, people use it. In addition, in the field of physics, it is common to need quick, precise measurements, so Celsius is converted to Kelvin.
What is Kelvin?
The Kelvin scale is represented as K. It is primarily employed in scientific fields such as engineering and physics. In contrast to Celsius, the Kelvin scale begins at absolute zero, which is 0 K. Absolute zero is the lowest temperature at which a substance can exist.
Unlike other scales, the Kelvin scale is not expressed with a degree symbol; instead, it is written simply as K. The distinction between Celsius and Kelvin is straightforward:
- 0 K = -273.15 °C (absolute zero)
- 273.15 K = 0 °C (water freezing point)
- 373.15 K = 100 °C (water boiling point)
Measuring heat in negative integers does not work, which is why Kelvin is useful in fields like space, energy, and extreme temperature studies. For example, room temperature is about 293 K, and the sun's surface measures at 5,778 K.
Scientific experiments, climate research, and even physics benefit from the understanding of Kelvin.
